Benevolent business drops chicken price
by Yvonne Webb, Trinidad GuardianIn the midst of rising food prices, Nutrina Farms announces a 50 per cent decrease in the price of its chicken, effective today, CEO Ronnie Mohammed says.
He said live broilers, which were sold at $5.75 a pound in January, were now $2.99.
In a paid advertisement, which also appears in today’s Guardian, Nutrina, a member of the Nutrimix Group of Companies, said processed (chilled or frozen) whole fryers would retail at $5.99 per pound, while empty fryers would be sold at $6.49 per pound.
Mohammed said his company was making a tremendous sacrifice to bring about customer relief, but attributed their action to a surplus in the market, plus the cost of grain to feed the birds.
“It is a question of supply and demand, which we believe has been compounded by an influx of imported inferior chicken.”
Mohammed said his company would keep the prices low and pass it on to the consumers, as long as the company could.
“We don’t know how long we can sustain these prices, but it is an opportunity to give consumers a chance to have some relief by having cheaper chicken which, basically at this price, may turn out to be cheaper than blue food,” Mohammed said in the interview. He said he was hoping consumers would benefit from the price reduction for the past few weeks. Despite this, he had not seen any adjustment in prices at pluck shops and supermarkets.
“We want consumers to know what the pluck shops and groceries are paying for Nutrina chicken, so they in turn will be guided as to what they should be paying at the retail end of it.”
