National Theatre Arts Company to stage historic first production

The Ministry of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs will, for the first time in the history of our twin island Republic, host the 1st Command Presentation of the National Theatre Arts Company of Trinidad and Tobago entitled: “Dance Me, Lover”. This jewel historic, premiere event will take place on Saturday November 14, 2009 at the Auditorium, of the new National Academy for the Performing Arts, Prince’s Building Grounds, Queen’s Park East, Port of Spain.

A Gala Reception will commence at 6:30 pm where an exhibition, mounted by local designer, Anthony Cummings, will be hosted under the auspices of the Honourable Prime Minister, Patrick Manning, and Mrs. Manning. President of the Republic, His Excellency Professor Maxwell Richards and Dr. Jean Ramjohn-Richards will also be in attendance. The exhibition will be followed by the drama presentation, Dance Me, Lover at 8:00 pm.

The Honourable Marlene McDonald, Minister of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs, and Minister with responsibility for the Public Auditorium of the Academy for the Performing Arts will join the Honourable Prime Minister in hosting the event.

The Prince’s Building, which was the premiere entertainment space in the city of Port of Spain during the heyday of the 19th century will have its history live on through the new National Academy for the Performing Arts.

Dance Me, Lover, written by Ronald John, is a play that celebrates the music, dances and splendid costumes that were once common in Trinidad and Tobago, when the Prince’s Building was known for being a major dancehall venue. The Play will feature cast members which include young and old experts in the local theatre arena, as well as the high quality work of veteran Director, Louis McWilliams, who has directed over 40 plays, including the theatrical production Ogun Iyan for CARIFESTA X. The Band Divine Echoes, which is managed under the auspices of the Office of the Prime Minister, will provide live music that will evoke the Big Band Dance culture of years ago.

Playwright Ronald John intends to move “Dance Me, Lover” from page to stage and is confident that the Cast, Crew, and Management of the production will present a cultural gift to the people of Trinidad and Tobago.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
