Nelson Island tour and lecture to mark Indian Arrival Day

The National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago will host a lecture entitled: “Jahajin's Journey – The Experience of Indian Women during Indentureship (1845-1920),” in commemoration of Indian Arrival Day, to be celebrated this Sunday, May 30, 2010.

The presentation will examine the experiences of East Indian women during indentureship and the artefacts and documents related to that historical period. The lecture will be presented by Dr. Radica Mahase, a graduate of the University of the West Indies and Jawaharalal Nehru University in New Delhi, India. She is currently a teacher at Naparima Girls High School.

The lecture takes place this Saturday, May 29, 2010 at 9:30 am at the Assembly Area on Nelson Island. Transport will be provided by the Treasure Queen, which leaves Pier II, Chaguaramas at 8:30 am (boarding from 8:00 am). The cost of the trip is $75.00 for Juniors (under 18 years), $100.00 for members of the National Trust and $130.00 for non-members.

In his book "Western Isles of Trinidad," historian Anthony de Verteuil said Nelson Island occupies a pivotal position in the defence of Port of Spain. It has an unobstructed view of the sea-approach around Point Gourd and of any attack by land along the Carenage coast. The island is large enough (1.7 hectares) to accommodate a number of cannons and with deep water right up to its southern shore. Nelson is one of a chain of islands off Trinidad known as The Five Islands.

This lecture and tour is being presented under the auspices of the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs.

The AAA did not stage championships after 1962 due to internal politics within the organisation. Championships were again held in 1969 and 1970 under the auspices of the National Athletes Union (NAU) who facilitated the formation of the National Amateur Athletic Association of Trinidad and Tobago (NAAA) in 1971.

Trinidad election 2010: know your MP

A coalition dubbed the "People's Partnership," formed by the United National Congress, the Congress of the People and three others, has secured 29 out of the 41 seats available in the House of Representatives of Trinidad and Tobago, following snap general elections on Monday, May 24, 2010.

The coalition, led by the former first female Opposition Leader who will today become the country's first female Prime Minister, defeated the People's National Movement for the first time in almost a decade. The PNM held on to 12 of the 26 seats it enjoyed before the then Prime Minister Patrick Manning called a snap election.

Prime Minister elect Kamla Persad-Bissessar, born April 22, 1952 in Siparia, will be sworn into office at 4:00 pm by President George Maxwell Richards during a highly anticipated ceremony at Knowsley building in the capital city of Port of Spain. She is expected to immediately name an Attorney General and the country expects to know who will comprise the entire Cabinet by Thursday.

According to official numbers released by the Elections and Boundaries Commission, of the 1,040,127 strong electorate, almost 70 percent turned out to vote. Some 317,805 abstained. Of the 722,322 people who took part in the polls, 432,026 voted for one of the five parties making up the coalition. The PNM received 285,354 votes across the country.

The House of Representatives of the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago will now be comprised of the following persons for the period 2010 to 2015.
